I play poker a lot and have for 20 years, and I've even been told I'm a very skilled player however I'm very unlucky at it. If I could change it I could probably make a lot of money playing it , but I don't know how to change it I'll be ahead the entire hand until the last card (river card) comes out and screws me giving it to my opponent. I mean sometimes my opponent only has 1 or 2 cards they can hit out of 52 cards to beat me and they'll hit that card. Happens way too often. but not every single night I play. Usually when I have average luck I will win that night either tournament or cash game.

Why are some unlucky and some are lucky? How do you reverse your fate?

If there's no such thing as luck, then the randomness just happens to screw me over by chance with nothing else involved, it's possible.

Well, if the comet didn't hit earth, how many millions years ago and kill dinosaurs? Would humans be what humans are today?

If we were born during the plague, how lucky would you be to survive to your 50's or older?

If you were born in North Korea today, how unlucky would you be?

Fair questions!

I mean, some people work 18 hours a day. 6 days a week. Barely make it. Some people are born a billionaires son or daughter.

I mean, even so-called made billionaires like Bill Gates had a mother working for IBM. Told IBM executives to take a chance on her son's company. How lucky was he!

Very important in Monopoly, not so important in Chess.

But seriously, I don't pay too much importance to luck. People relying on luck are bound to be disappointed in life.

You make a good point, IMO. Life is like Monopoly and chess at the same time. You can make the right moves and still lose by being unlucky.

I consider myself very fortunate / lucky. Basically just chance.
Of course it doesn't mean it's a real thing but it's a way of describing circumstances that happen out that are basically out of our control.

"Unlucky" if you have childhood cancer etc - "lucky" if you win the lottery.

Sometimes you still need to act - as you can't win the lottery without buying a ticket.
And can't crash a motorcycle if you never ride one... :)

Lol instead of talking about being unlucky in poker I should have really said I got prostate cancer at 36 years old, and it's almost always an old man's disease. But I was very lucky to have even found out and I might be dead right now. I was in the gym lifting weights and not seeing results, so I decided to have my testosterone checked. It was low like I thought but I had a PSA of 17 it's supposed to be 4 or below basically it tells you if you have cancer or not and I did. So I had the surgery had my prostate removed. Causes sexual side effects and such, those are for life. But it was nearly 7 years ago and I'm cancer free for nearly 6 years.

So am I unlucky for getting prostate cancer at 36? Definitely, but was I lucky to even find out I had it and thus able to cure it? Yes. So I'm not sure where that falls in the luck/unluck category you can be both.

Sorry to hear that, my bro. I hope you are doing better.

Yeah I'm good except some fatigue and some sexual stuff I won't get into. But by the time men hit their 40s that happens a lot anyway. If we met in person you wouldn't know at all.

The point to this thread is sometimes people should take a chance when the opportunity raises. Also understand how lucky they might have it in life in general.

I agree a lot of is just your own perspective like my life has been far from perfect and I don't have a lot of money but I have relatives that do, but I would actually rather be me than them.

My post was more general to all members.

@Jayinem I agree 100%

Is luck important? Is our life primarily driven by chance? I'd say: “Yes!”

Sinchen, keep that text of reasonable length!

While there are some correlations maybe sometimes going into the direction of causality for influence on happiness in out life, the biggest part is determined externally.

This has been even more extreme in the past. A poor son of a farmer had less possibilities than the son of a noble. Not even talking about the girls.
So, yes, there has been some kind of improvement regarding giving people equal chances, but let’s be realistic: One would have to master the art of ignorance to not acknowledge HUGE amounts of inequity everywhere. Much of your chances in life are predetermined by who you are, not by what you do/did.
This general observation isn’t invalidated by anecdotal counterexamples.

I very much doubt the American “forge your own destiny”-stuff. Statements like this are abused to blame people for “their unwillingness to take action in order to improve their situation” -- to call victims of bad circumstances guilty.

Often people unhappy with their unlucky lives are accused of being ungrateful “because it could be worse and other people have even worse fate.” True. In most cases it is easy to name selected people (or whole groups or even countries) with generally worse circumstances. Yeah! That’s really helpful! If you are tied to the wall of a dark dungeon cellar and rats are biting off your toes, you should be grateful to have a roof above your head!

I’ve seen injustice and inequity myself countless times; and I’m always on the loser’s side.
I’ve seen big assholes having success. Impostors. People who know jack shit about their job. People who get paid for not doing their job. And they get away with it. Even guys who should be in jail. But thanks to their luck their deeds never get noticed and they are never prosecuted.

You can try as hard as you want. Without good luck your life is gonna be :shit:

Agreed to @Jayinem

Been penniless and homeless, after coming back from conflicts overseas. Neither family nor friends [whom encouraged me to join in the first place] helped me out. But by some luck, was found by the health department, and now I have an apartment, some money and friends here on GBAtemp.

While I think relying just on pure "luck" is a game that will only lead to disappointment in life, I do think it does play a good factor in the ways your interact in your daily life. What you can perceive as you being "lucky" is just the constant dice roll of daily life, whatever we like it or not. Pure never-ending effort may lead to nothing if there isn't a bit of luck to enhance it's effects

Define context.

Luck can be utilized in many ways.
Luck/being Lucky in what exactly?

Luck in games? Gambling?
Almost got crushed by a truck but it dodged you, so you got Lucky?
Fell in s rock crusher but your co-worker stopped the machine well after you hot half your body crushed, thus you're lucky you're still alive?
Found a shinny Pokemon in Pokemon Crystal?

Luck is really dependable from the context, I'd take the shinny pokemon any day, but if I were being crushed I'd rather go completely.
